Test Driven Development

X Topic Abstract

What is Exploratory testing?

Exploratory testing (ET) is the art of carrying out software tests the way naval and land explorers did before we had planes, satellites and Google earth. In opposition to scripted testing, the test cases are not described before the tests are executed. This does not mean that ET is totally unplanned testing, but rather that the testing is described as a mission for how to explore the software in order to discover potential problems instead of each step in detail. Similar to the old explorers, the software exploratory tester carries a charter, or a mission description, which defines the general “exploratory direction” of the ET. This is in strong contrast to how the long list of test cases used in scripted testing, which is, in the traveling metaphor, basically a full description for how to get from A to B.

The term session-based test management (Bach, 2003) refers to a number of related exploratory tests.

Topics to cover:
- ET Vs Scripted testing
- ET Techniques
- Where does it fit?
- Who should use?
- ET - an example
- Key Takeaway

X Topic Abstract

As more and more market disruptive firms are emerging in the Retail & Consumer goods industry, companies across the globe have realized that their supply chains are both critical to success and can be a strategic advantage. Majority of the latest innovation in supply chain are happening in the technology space.

Market pressure to respond to innovation, has led the Industry to adopt COTS Products (like Manhattan, JDA RedPrairie , IBM Sterling Commerce etc.) . Such packages come with minimal development effort and an expectation of "Faster" roll-out. So, with the ease of getting out of the box solutions, there is an increased expectation for accelerated testing and getting the product live. Test Automation is an essential weapon to meet this business expectation.

We have used BDD based test automation solution for a WMS COTS package upgrade for a US based large discount Retailer. BDD provides a natural & frictionless construct, to model package configuration and customizations. This also forms a foundation for the program and business stakeholders to align on the business values or outcomes. This presentation shares our learnings from this exercise.

X Topic Abstract

Agile software development primarily implies iterative development and quick accommodation of change requests. Hence, the key motive of the testers is "To ensure Quality in Reduced the Cycle Time" Especially when the software under development is large and if it is developed in a strangulated model using micro-services architecture, testing becomes more complex. In such cases, Test Automation combined with the Continuous Integration (CI) setup aids the testing to a great extent.

This session throws light on approaches to build a safety net of automated testes for your application, in a situation where the application under development has multiple integration points, multiple parallely developing and changing components, third party upstream downstream systems for which you do not have access to test and huge volume of data to handle.

Choosing the automation candidates, test data setup techniques and streamlining the test executions in CI platform will be elaborated.

X Topic Abstract

Behaviour Driven Approach or BDD is more suitable for Agile Projects. The user story is taken as base to develop the application as well as to create the automation script.

The entire Test process is put up in a continuous integration environment. Any remote user over the cloud could trigger the automation on actual handsets. Secured Cloud is established for device consolidation.

Round Table Discussion

X Topic Abstract

Automation in recent past is not only seen as independent project opportunity, but it is also highlighted as value add to manage market competitions for winning the overall project deal - be it development or test only projects. In all these contexts, core values of Automation in terms of ROI considerations, feasibility, framework, design standards & estimations are neglected to push on mere deliverables. Even the worst case of demanding to deliver automation scripts inline to manual test case productivity is also encouraged. Though we cannot just blame on the management direction as the selling point is becoming tougher & tougher from their end as well, automation analyst should innovate on process & technical areas to meet the growing need though it conflicts on the core principles of automation. In this context, I see traditional automation is being disturbed from their comfort operating zone to adjust to the agility nature of projects & varying functional and business need. During the discussion, I shall touch base on what are the imbalances in expectations that is brought into automation and its final output when they are just subjected to traditional automation deliverable mechanism. I will also brief on the innovative remedies that should be included as adjusted factors to the imbalances so as to produce the quality output as like traditional automation deliverable.

X Topic Abstract

With Quality of Service becoming key to competitive advantage Time to Market is determining business success. An IT enabled end user has no patience to wait and loyalty shifts are happening in matter of hours if not minutes. Fast paced changes in the composite application architectures combined with Technology and Platform enhancements have added to the deployment complexities are driving stakeholders look around for alternatives and focus is automation. If organizations have goal to improve deployment cycle, which in few cases has reached less than every 15 seconds, then only option is end to end automation. Businesses which have not been able to keep pace with the change are either been marginalized or have diluted their identity. In this session Sharad would share and interact on the trends and changing focus on automation being considered as an enabler delivering assurance to business on Functionality, Availability, Scalability, Security parameters to name the few.

X Topic Abstract

Several organizations are still coming to grips with Agile software development. Extending agility beyond software development to cover from business back to business, all the way through ideation, requirements etc. to post production and user experience can take the head for a spin but the next transformation paradigm DevOps has come in and is here to stay.

Are we ready for DevOps?' or 'How ready are we for DevOps?' are questions that several IT heads are asking themselves today. In this paper we will look at how we can assess the organization's readiness to adopt devops and focus on the assurance perspective with respect to the readiness. People, process, technology and governance angles will be looked at. Change and the management of change at the organization level (Organization Change Mangement) becomes very important in the context of adopting devops. We will take a look at possible ways of handling the change management and include suggestions and best practices that can be adopted in the handling of the change. We will also talk about what is involved in sustaining the change.

Use of tools and automation in the context of devops assurance, from a readiness perspective, will be looked at. Typical challenges with respect to automation readiness and possible solutions for the frequently encountered challenges (FEC) will also be covered briefly.
