Topic Abstract

To ensure product quality, we often restrict ourselves for functional testing. This includes web, mobile and backend runtime functional testing. However, non-functional testing plays an equally important role to ensure product quality. These include performance testing, security testing, load testing, API testing, Cloud Integration testing etc. In this session, we highlight some of the important functional and non-functional test principles along with automation challenges, automation approaches, tools and framework design principles.

Topic Abstract

A well-defined automation framework helps to maintain higher reusability and develops easily maintainable scripts. It is very important to choose an effective automation framework for any project or organization which is more effective and can be used across projects and have higher ROI from the automation project.

To consider a framework, we must understand the requirements and select an approach to create an effective automation framework. Below mentioning few points which are important to consider to create an effective framework.

- What all kind of application need to automate? It might be Web, Webservices/API, Mobile, Desktop, specific application like Oracle, SAP, etc.

- Flow requirement? Single application or combination frontend and backend.

- Who all are going to use this automation framework for execution?

It can be used by QA, Developer or business people as well

- What kind of reporting we require?

- Do you require any separate logging for debugging?

- Is your framework require Performance Testing using those functional scenarios?

- Is any requirement of GUI testing?

- Do you require CI/CD integration?

- Do you require Code coverage also?

- Do you require Big Data integration too?

If we are clear of what we require then we can move to selecting tool, technologies, methodologies to create an effective framework. To achieve desired benefits the framework must be accurately designed and developed.

Topic Abstract

Expectation from the Automation team is always Quick Execution and Better Results. Agile is the current development trend, the most common thing is 2 weeks Sprint, For better product delivery the expectation is to find out the breakages in short period time, This is one of the reason which creating lot of dependency on the automation team.

Most of the UI Automation scenarios can be broadly divided into 3 parts, 1 is the Pre-condition, Actual Test Scenario, Collecting Execution Reports which could be screen shots, client logs and server side logs.

APIs are the backbone for most of the UI applications and most of the pre-conditions can be achieved using API’s… Advantages with this approach is,

1. Very Quick in Execution to set Pre-condition

2. No browser Dependency

3. More Accurate

Once the pre-condition is set from API, Actual Test scenario execution starts on the Browsers.

X

Topic Abstract

Automation testing plays a crucial role to facilitate a user with quality software. The challenge begins when end user demands quality software with constrained resources and time.

In scenarios where applications require fixed set of actions to be performed, but with a lot of permutations and combinations of the various parameters, Data Driven Automation Framework is an ideal approach.

A generic algorithm is written which executes the test cases iteratively in a short span of time thereby increasing the test coverage. The framework is implemented in python in conjunction with selenium. The Python packages, viz., nose tests, pandas and selenium form the building blocks for the framework.

The algorithm is designed to generate a stream of URLS for all permutations and combinations of the various parameters which are fetched from a csv/excel file. Screenshots are captured for every URL rendered and response code status is captured in excel to analyze server errors.

The generated reports provide a very reliable and efficient mechanism to identify UI outliers and edge cases which otherwise would have been manually impractical. Re-usability of scripts/logic across projects with minimal configuration changes to meet specific dashboard/report requirements makes it a worthy investment. Running the scripts requires minimal human intervention ensuring higher accuracy and addresses the challenge of delivering quality software in a short span of time.

Topic Abstract

Is increased time to market and poor customer experience the concern faced, then "Continuous Testing & DevOps" is what you need. But what is Continuous Testing? And what is DevOps? DevOps is not a technology, a process or a standard; rather, it's an IT culture or movement that emphasizes ways in which development, testing and operations can collaborate efficiently.

DevOps comprises of 4 phases; Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Testing, Continuous Monitoring.

As IT organizations adopt a DevOps strategy, continuous testing (CT) becomes a key ingredient of the DevOps ecosystem. CT enables faster release cycles, more changes per release, upfront isolation of risks, and reduced operations costs. The approach to scale the traditional automation testing infrastructure, test environments, and test data management requires a culture shift using new tools and techniques.

Thus in nutshell, continuous testing synchronizes testing/QA with Dev and Ops processes and optimizes it to great extend, enabling organizations to beat the legacy issue of delayed time to market and delayed customer feedback.

More on "DevOps" and its key player "Continuous Testing" in further presentation.

Topic Abstract

A new trending IT culture to break through the lineage of delayed client feedback and increased time to market, is finally here for our rescue.

DevOps is the practice of operations and development engineers participating together in the entire service lifecycle, from design through the development process to production support.

Comprising of 4 phases; Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Testing, Continuous Monitoring, DevOps has proven its worth, since its evolvement.

The most important vital part of DevOps success is "Continuous Testing." It's a process of automatically and continually checking the changes in code. Whether it's a functional regression suite that runs with the check-in of every build, a smoke test suite at the start of every day or a performance test that checks SLA's every hour. The concept is more than automation; it represents consistent continuous validation that keeps the DevOps mission moving forward.

High potential tools namely Jenkins, AWS, GitHub etc. support DevOps in its long chasing goal. In conclusion, when "DevOps" and "Continuous Testing" join hands, does the cynical IT issues lose their ground.

Topic Abstract

Rapid application development and flexibility to make changes to make the product relevant, and with it, the demand of “Rolls Royce like” quality is the expectation placed on IT department. Improving the Software/code quality is just not limited to QA organization, its responsibility of the entire Software society.

DevOps connects development, quality assurance, and technical operations personnel in a way that the entire ‘build-test- release-run- repeat’ process operates as a factory, having clear roles and responsibilities and well-defined inputs and outputs to address inefficiencies like missing implementation deadlines and causing outages during or after implementation.

DevOps and Continuous Testing is most widely used across Java/.NET, Windows based applications but not yet familiar in Business Intelligence area. Building a Data Warehouse using DevOps and Continuous Testing has many obstacles to overcome. It is not enough to focus on the technical aspects, although these are challenging in themselves, you also need to adapt and grow your processes and people to realize the benefits of DevOps and Continuous Testing.

This presentation will explore how we can take Data warehouse/ETL testing to the next level by introducing DevOps and Continuous automated testing to their processes.

Topic Abstract

As part of Agile transformation in past few years we have seen IT organizations adopting continuous integration principles in their software delivery lifecycle. Later organizations realized that overall optimization with continuous integration - alone - was just not helping to make the entire delivery lifecycle efficient and hence didn't made a significant contribution towards the organization efficiency and continuous testing focus was missing.

Many still consider and talk about DevOps as an absolute thing: developers and operations are the same thing. Of course, this is not the case. DevOps is a range, where on the far left we have old-style ops (very exclusive) and on the far right we have developers doing all the ops (very inclusive). the idea of DevOps itself is only possible due to wide variety of tools which have become available: Jenkins, OpenStack, STAF, Selenium, Vagrant etc.

This discussion covers author's unique experience as an automation expert in NEC Technologies India and showcase the success story of DevOps in continuous testing. Specifically, it covers:

* How development environments provisioned with production scripts and the ability to test new scripts can allow developers to experiment with Ops.

* How DevOps environment with the hosted test scripts can maintain stability in your organization while allowing people unfamiliar with the Ops world to get involved

* How DevOps practices can operate in a Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)-enabled environment.

* How IaaS and DevOps, when used together, can reduce software delivery cycle times, drive automation, and increase efficiency.

* How you can leverage the best of OpenStack in deploying DevOps environment in your organization

At the end, it covers a Case study which will cover how we moved one of our project from Non DevOps to full featured DevOps enabled project. In this I will cover all aspect of development and deployment, and how much we benefited.

Topic Abstract

With an exponential rise in the demand of technology-driven products, manufacturers encounter a challenge in validating all interfaces of assembled products, each time the products are planned to be shipped.

Shipping the integrated products without the final interface-checks is a product quality threat, while performing a detailed series of manual validations impacts the shipment schedule adversely.

With the advent of the agile era of product development, cut-throat market competition and complex product architectures, this challenge has turned catastrophic.

Looking specifically at the storage domain, the storage servers which are meant for end-users or data-centers use, are assembled products consisting of major interfaces like: partitions, DAC, CPU, memory, disks, cache, ports, clock etc. are necessarily required to be tested for proper functioning before shipping.

A Pre-shipment Validation strategy uses automation as its backbone for comprehensive integration validation of all major interfaces of products at manufacturer’s end in order to unearth HW-SW integration defects and fix them timely, minimizing the products delivery time to customer. Backed by automation, this strategy helps in concurrent validation of any number of products with least number of human resources in an optimized and accelerated manner.

This paper provides a detailed insight of the Pre-shipment Validation strategy with its application to storage domain and telecom domain. It covers various scenarios, where using this automated and accelerated strategy proves useful resulting in time-to-market readiness and resource cost-optimization.

Breaking Away From Mainstream - Effective Exploratory TestingExploratory Testing is about the best use of available resources (time, skills, etc) and about finding as many bugs as possible within a set time frame. Sadly, it is not always considered when identifying suitable approaches for test strategies.

As testers, we learn about systems under test more and more during the lifecycle of a project. This knowledge can be utilised to extract value by adding continuously to our scripted or ad hoc test case repository.

Often, we will be asked to test with vague requirements, no documentation, asked to test very early, or while there is a high volatility of change in the requirements. These instances can be a perfect place to utilise exploratory testing to assist making the choice to deploy less risky.

Workshop Outline

What is Exploratory Testing?
Types of Exploratory Approaches
How to run an Exploratory Testing
How to know when to stop

X Topic Abstract

The Agile Manifesto was published in 2001. It took the software industry a good few years to truly understand what the manifesto means, and the principles behind it. However, choosing and implementing the right set of practices to get the true value from working the Agile way has been the biggest challenge for most!

While Agile has now gone mainstream, and as we get better at the development practices to being Agile, Testing has still been lagging behind in most cases. A lot of teams are still working in the staggered fashion - with testing following next after development completed.

In this workshop, we will learn and share various principles and practices which teams should adopt to be successful in testing on Agile projects.

Agenda :

- What is Agile testing? - Learn what does it mean to Test on Agile Projects
- Effective strategies for Distributed Testing - Learn practices that help bridge the Distributed Testing gap!
- Test Automation in Agile Projects - Why? What? How? - Why is Test Automation important, and how do we implement a good, robust, scalable and maintainable Test Automation framework!
- Build the "right" regression suite using Behavior Driven Testing (BDT) - Behavior Driven Testing (BDT) is an evolved way of thinking about Testing. It helps in identifying the 'correct' scenarios, in form of user journeys, to build a good and effective (manual & automation) regression suite that validates the Business Goals.

Key Learnings for participants in this workshop :

- Understand the Agile Testing Manifesto
- Learn the essential Testing practices and activities essential for teams to adopt to work in Agile way of working
- Discover techniques to do effective testing in distributed teams
- Find out how Automation plays a crucial role in Agile projects
- Learn how to build a good, robust, scalable and maintainable Functional Automation framework
- Learn, by practice, how to identify the right types of tests to automate as UI functional tests - to get quick and effective feedback

Pre-requisites :

- Basic working knowledge and understanding of Agile

Topic Abstract

Controlled Failure Testing in a Microservices DevOps pipeline is used to test ability of the service to survive failures in the cloud infrastructure and dependent services. Microservices DevOps team can leverage this to identify and fix latent issues, before they become customer nightmares. It can also help ensure uniform & consistent implementation of the recovery best practices across all the Microservices, during the devops lifecycle. This session will delve into the details of the Controlled Failure Testing framework -- how to inject the different failure conditions in the cloud environment (better than Chaos Monkey) in a controlled manner, how it can help to increase the resilience of microservice hosted on the cloud, and how it can be integrated into the Continuous Delivery pipeline.

Topic Abstract

Problem and Motivation:

Security has been the key inhibitor in the cloud adoption; the key reason being most of the control either in terms of processing, data storage or movement is with provider and not customer.

Cloud security is defined in the multiple paradigms that is IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, the scope of our problem is limited to the security in PaaS

We have targeted the problem of enabling secure applications are deployed by the customer.

The motivation for this problem had been that in case of PaaS, single VM can be running applications from different customers or single customer with different applications. Security breach in any one of the application can actually impact other applications and thereby risking all applications on the VM and deterring the image of the cloud provider.

Background and Related Work:

Platform as a service (PaaS) is a category of cloud computing services that provides a computing platform and a solution stack as a service. [Source: Wikipedia].

It is a service model where vendors provide application services, middleware (databases, messaging, etc) for the application developers to buid and deploy applications.

Using PaaS, the application developers can directly use the complete development environment as provided by vendors and create and deploy their code. This implies that customers do not have to build their own environment for building and deploying applications but can directly access PaaS services and use the same platform to deploy applications.

This implies in the PaaS environment, data must be accessed, modified and stored and any application vulnerability which can affect data in any of this phase of access, processing and storing can be deterrent for the application.

Below is the list of few of the security challenges in the PaaS:

- Security of customer data stored at multiple places (not necessarily a single disk).

- Secure clean up of customer data stored at local VM space or container in case of deletion or migration

- Security of PaaS environment/ framework like firewalls, SSL communication across services, authentication and authorization support for individual customers access, etc.

- Key management for encryption/decryption.

- Application developed using PaaS environment and deployed in PaaS

As part of related work, we found that security services are being enabled by PaaS Providers. Eg: PaaS providers have firewalls, support secure SSL based communication across services; have authentication/authorization feature and few more. PaaS also provides the application scanners as service for customer to use them based on their choice.

However, these are based on customer’s choice, our proposal is to discuss various security challenges in PaaS and bring security integrated application platform into PaaS so that application is validated to be secure enough for successful deployment.

Approach and Uniqueness:

We are proposing to include security analyzer framework into PaaS layer which will enable security integrated architecture for PaaS developed/deployed applications.

It is a framework which is plugin based enabling multiple scanners to be integrated based on customer requirement like Network scanner, Application scanner, etc.

The actual implementation of this will involve:

- Configuration file to:

1. Define type of security scanner

2. Level of security scanning – Default or customized

- Default – Policies defined in security policy file based on top industry defined security vulnerabilities which should be mandatorily passed by the application

- Customized – Additional policies defined by customer in security policy file.

1. Specific Industry Security standard validation eg PCI etc. Default is none

- Security Policy File

1. Security policies defined based on scanning level as configured by customer.

- Module to invoke security analyzer at point of deployment.

- Module to analyze the report generated by scanner and validate it with customer required security configuration as defined in security policy.

- Module to alert the customer of scanning validation pass and reporting the list of policy failures.

Results and Contributions:

Result of this proposal would be a plug-in which can enable Secure Application Development at PaaS layer which will contribute towards Cloud Security and promote cloud adoption with benefits as below:

- Customers get same secure application development platform as they build for in-house.

- Customers can be sure of security of their applications and get options to run various scanners based on their application requirement

- By enabling deployment of secure applications on PaaS, the provider protects not only the particular customer application but also other customer's applications running in same VM, and it also improves provider image and stand on security.

Quality is not an act; it is a habit - Aristotle

The world of technology is changing at an ever increasing pace. Just ten years ago, speech recognition and machine translation was in their early stages. Autonomous vehicles, drones, machine learning, facial recognition, holograms, 3d video, bots, and predictive analytics were all the science and technology of the future. Today, the world of technology moves faster than ever. Software development methodologies have changed and the stakes are higher than ever. The former world of traditional software testing - test the quality into the software after all the feature code has been written and stabilized – is simply not an approach that competitive products can employ to ensure a high quality user experience. At the same time, products must be functional and the higher the quality of the experience, the more competitive the product can be. There are a variety of trends and techniques taking root in the rapidly changing world of software development process that are interesting to explore. From gamification to telemetry, from crowdsource testing to flighting, from A/B testing and experimentation to text mining customer feedback, from human centered design to defect prevention, from cloud to secure, consumerization of IT to myriad of platforms, from app store reviews to automatic updates, from big data to predictive analytics - there are a host of new opportunities to improve software quality that respect the spirit of rapid iteration while honoring the customer experience. Software continues to improve the human experience, and quality experiences are imperative as more of the human population relies on machine intelligence to get by in our lives. This exploration into the future of software testing will canvass a variety of trends that influence the world of software testing.

The role of testing within an organisation, be it internal, external or a managed service, has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. As a profession we have (mostly) evolved from Border Control (you shall not pass!!!), through to Gate Keeper (owner of quality), to Trusted Advisor (shared ownership), or in some cases somewhere in between these three.

The question we are asked, by many different people in the SDLC, in many different ways, ultimately boils down to the same thing... Are we ready to ship?

This presentation explores the following:

1. How do we as testers currently answer this question based on what role we currently fulfill (Border Control, Gate Keeper, Trusted Advisor)

2. What are the pitfalls in the way we currently answer this question (Border Control, Gate Keeper, Trusted Advisor)

3. How do we change our approach to more effectively (and more quickly) answer this question, and evolve through to the Trusted Advisor.

Testing organizations moving towards Agile are primarily focusing on Speed to Market and Cost. They want to achieve more with less without compromising the software quality. The major issues faced are:

SPEED – TO – MARKET - Organization want to go-to-market quickly with Digital solutions. It’s all Worthless if Competition goes faster than you. We deploy innovative DevOps solutions to enable Continuous Integration and Deployment. DevOps fail in the process as organizations IGNORE in-Sprint test automation. The reason - Industry does not have a SOLUTION to enable IN-SPRINT TEST AUTOMATION.

Cost - 60% of the cost allocated for testing is spent on creating automated test cases. With transformational projects in pipeline to ride the digital wave the spent on Testing is going to rise to 30% of the IT projects spent. To reduce this cost we need a solution which can create automated test cases non-intrusively: Robotize it and reduce the cost of testing below 18% of the total spent on IT projects. Unfortunately Industry does not have a solution for this EITHER.

If only, there could be a solution that would help resolve the issues related to unavailability of Agile Testing Skills and augment swift transition from Waterfall to Agile.

Testing discipline has fast evolved. Regardless of the changes in technologies and IT landscape, testing has continued to remain focus areas for organizations, more so in todays’ digital world, where cost of failure is high.

Before one makes an attempt to chart out future of testing in next decade, it would be good to summarize the technologies of tomorrow that testing discipline needs to cater to.

Key trends that would shape future of IT include (i) Platforms for Business to connect new partners and consumers cutting out middlemen (ii) Cognitive Intelligence demonstrated by Machines/ Robots (iii) Changing work(places) of Future (iv) Multi-channel customer connect with IOT/Wearables integration (v) Pervasive technologies / autonomics / predictive analytics for customer experience. While all this sounds new, the need for basics (master data management, information/application security, strong governance of IT) are foundational cornerstones.

What does the future of testing look like in this changed world of Information Technology? What is expected from Testing discipline in terms of Test Process, People Skills, and Testing Tools/Technologies? Renu would leapfrog her imagination to chart out a future of testing.

X Topic Abstract

➢ Security of customer data stored at multiple places (not necessarily a single disk).
➢ Secure clean up of customer data stored at local VM space or container in case of deletion or migration
➢ Security of PaaS environment/ framework like firewalls, SSL communication across services, authentication and authorization support for individual customers access, etc.
➢ Key management for encryption/decryption.
➢ Application developed using PaaS environment and deployed in PaaS

- By enabling deployment of secure applications on PaaS, the provider protects not only the particular customer application but also other customer’s applications running in same VM, and it also improves provider image and stand on security.
