X Topic Abstract

This presentation is a story (albeit an unfinished story) that starts with a dream - an automated testers dream. The dream of automation is about pressing a button and letting a machine do the work for you… It is about machines and programs doing jobs that you do, but faster and more efficiently. The rest of the story is about my attempts to make that dream a reality – and the journey of successes, challenges and experiences in that process. The story is about my experiences and experiments with test automation, how we integrated them into the build stack and how we were able to enhance testing along with the productivity of the software development team. This presentation will unpack and highlight the processes, challenges and successes that our testing team has been working on for the last 3 Years.

X Topic Abstract

When companies adopted Agile, it scared many software testers. Many struggled to find their place in Agile teams where they no longer have extended periods of code freeze and testing cycles.

Now we have a new disruptor: DevOps, which advocates automation to the n'th degree. How does a software tester remain relevant, nay vital in companies who adopts DevOps?

X Topic Abstract

You often hear within agile teams that creating a test strategy is a waste of time. Some experts say that there just needs to be a general understanding between the different team members on how the product will tested and that testing and quality just…happen. I will be presenting a sample one pager test strategy to show why we need to specify foundations and agreements regarding the product quality and the software testing approach. This will assist to establishing the level of required product quality that is committing to deliver

Speaker Profile

I am a senior quality assurance consultant at Thoughtworks and, since 1999, have specialised in software testing and quality assurance. I believe it offers more opportunities than straight development. As a result, I've had the good fortune to gain exposure to a wide range of remarkable opportunities in South Africa and the United States, being exposed to the concrete elements of best practices across a range of disciplines, assignments, projects, organisations and industries. I am fascinated by the constant change, which ensures there is always something new for me to learn. In my spare time I run 5km, 10km and half marathon races.

Round Table Discussion

Participants join a table to discuss one or more of the Conference themes - Each table has a "Topic Guru" to facilitate the discussion.

X Topic Abstract

Test driven development (TDD) and the associated metrics of code coverage is without a doubt valid and valuable. Faced with reality and legacy code, TDD is often met with doubt.

Getting the code coverage of an existing system to a high level is often of less value and more costly that rewriting it using a TDD approach. Rarely is either option feasible.

So what do we do in future, to trust the system we’re producing without wasting resources?

Always focus on the test where the code warrants it, but remain wary of static tests that erode over time.

Let's test the system according to its expected behaviour and improve the whole, and use the same to evaluate performance.

The reason a system exists and is created does not inherently change, and this forms the basis of Model Based Testing.

X Topic Abstract

Agile is a state of mind. What happens when a developer does not stay in this state of mind and starts under performing.

What happens when the carrot is used and what happens when the whip is used. How do other developer work with this developer and how do other developer help this developer get better or break. Drugs, Depression and other problems that cause this.
