About The Event

Spark Kafka is a powerful open source processing engine built around speed, ease of use, and sophisticated analytics. Spark has seen rapid adoption by enterprises across a wide range of industries. Internet powerhouses such as Yahoo, eBay and Netflix have deployed Spark at massive scale, processing multiple petabytes of data on clusters of over 8,000 nodes. UNICOM is organizing Kafka and spark day conference to bring together the Kafka and spark leaders together to engage you with experts, core committers, and leading production users of Kafka, Spark, stream processing frameworks, and related projects. Attendees will also learn where the Spark and Kafka project development is headed and how companies are using these for large-scale, real-time data integration, and stream processing in a variety of applications.

So don’t miss it!!!

X Topic Abstract

Big data processing is undoubtedly one of the most exciting areas in computing today, and remains an area of fast evolution and introduction of new ideas. Apache Spark is at the cusp of overtaking MapReduce to emerge as the de-facto standard for big data processing. Thanks to it's multi-functional capabilities (Streaming,MLLib and GraphX) , Spark is now a dominant compute technology across various industry use cases and real-time analytics applications.

Machine learning is one of the key drivers for the growing adoption of Apache Spark. In this talk we will focus on how Spark can be leveraged for advanced analytics applications with some real-life use-cases from Retail and IoT verticals, explore various Machine Learning Capabilities of Spark that will help in finding patterns, trends and outliers to predict certain events or provide recommendations. We will explore latest features on Spark ML and best practices for performance/scale.

Audience is expected to have some basic knowledge of ML as this talk will not go into the details of supervised/unsupervised algorithms.

X Topic Abstract

Data Analytics on the fly (DAF) to get (close to) real-time insights is becoming very critical for many businesses for being driven and led in the right direction. We have various tools that help us achieve this, Kafka, Flink etc being a couple to mention, which are gaining steep popularity being open source.

Speaker Profile

Padmakumar (PK) Nambiar has close to 23 yrs of experience writing code and leading product development teams. He started his career with Electornics R&D Centre (now CDAC) as a Programmer after completing MTech from NIT, Calicut. Later joined IBM Software Labs in Bangalore, where he primarily led development efforts on IBM MQ and WAS products, post which he worked at Aptean as Director Engineering for their CRM products, and later as VP Engineering for Genpact's BigData Analytics Labs. After leaving Genpact in Aug 2016, he is onto setting up his own startup venture focusing on Artificial Intelligence using ANNs.

Round Table Discussion

Participants join a table to discuss one or more of the Conference themes. Each table has a "Topic Guru" to facilitate the discussion.

X Topic Abstract

Designing an enterprise class streaming application has significant challenges. Such challenges include handling imperfections in data stream - e.g. out of order arrival of data, handling system recoverable or irrecoverable system failures, and guaranteeing consistent results.

In real world applications these discrepancies are often exhibited and current distributed stream computation requires end user to handle such discrepancies and design custom solutions.

Structured streaming is the new component introduced from Spark 2.0 to simplify end to end development of continuous application where consistency, fault-tolerance and stream imperfection handling mechanisms are inbuilt.

In this talk I will try to explain problems faced while building high-throughput real world streaming application and how such problems can be solved using structured streaming and structured stream processing model provided in Spark 2.0. In specific I will talk about strong notion of prefix consistency, transactional source modelling, interactive stream queries and analytics on structured streams.

X Topic Abstract

In the current world of BigData, Kafka is one of the leading messaging systems. LinkedIn generates billions of log entries and events that capture its over-few hundred million members’ activities every day. Jay Kreps and his team from LinkedIn were looking for a logging system which can handle high volume content with very high velocity at low latency. In 2010, they came up with Kafka messaging system which not only provides the solution of those problems but also ensure that messages are always available even in case of server failure. It is scalable and distributed in nature by design and can support 2 million writes per second. Compare to other traditional messaging systems, Kafka offers the best performance and scalability when we have a fire hose of events (100k+/sec).

My name is Goutam Chowdhury. I completed my graduation from IIEST,Shibpur. I started my career as a developer in “Indian railway online ticket booking system” project. Before joining Thomson Reuters, I got chance to work with IBM and Yahoo. I have total around 10 years of experience in Java, J2ee and BigData related technologies. In Thomson Reuters, am working on several projects where we do ingest high volume data to our internal data lake using Spark, Kafka and other BigData related technologies.

X Topic Abstract

We’ll start the talk with a live, interactive demo generating audience-specific recommendations using NiFi, Kafka, Spark Streaming, SQL, ML, and GraphX. Next, we’ll dive deep into the data flow between each of the key components. We use NiFi to track all data transformations using its “data provenance” capabilities. We use Kafka for its high-throughput and high-availability features. And we use Spark Streaming to dynamically train our ML models in real-time using an incremental Streaming Matrix Factorization library from Databricks
