Renu has overall 25 years of experience in leading IT Services Delivery, IT Outsourcing Governance, Infrastructure Services, and Business/IT Consulting including Solution and Technical Sales. She has covered Shared Delivery (Factory Model), Fixed Bid, Managed Services engagements, and transitions in her service delivery experience. In her roles with Capgemini Renu led a large Managed Testing Services contract in an outcome based model. Renu is currently heading Testing GSL Rightshore Sales.

Renu is Capgemini Global Testing thought leader featured on capgemini.com on "Managed Services" subject matter and Capgemini's global Expert Connect program. Renu was recently conferred "Testing Leader of the Year 2015" award by Unicom's India Testing League. Renu has authored book "Software Testing" which was published with McGrawHill in 2003 and has seen 13 reprints so far, and this book is a text/recommended reading in many universities in India. The book has been recently revised and is under publication. Renu has been recipient of Testing thought leadership award in 2008 by PureTesting. During run time, for the System level testing over heterogeneous environment, resources are required to be allocated dynamically catering for a wide fluctuation in the demand. The test designer is required to be transparent to this allocation. To make it happen, the application software is required to be partitioned appropriately and deployed dynamically so that a single process does not block the resources for long. The test software has to support a variety of platforms and versions (of the application software). At the end, the software is required to be scalable and support quality of service (QoS) for a variety of end users. The modules are to be organized in hierarchical fashion with each level providing a different degree of service based on the nature of the application. It has to enforce automatic reconfiguration of the hardware, software and the data of the cloud. With this approach, the overall development cycle gets shortened. Experience shows that test automation over the cloud has resulted in at least 10 times improvement in the speed owing to the customization

Research in the same field led to PhD, about 135 journal & conference publications, patent disclosures and a book. He represented Philips in international standardization bodies such as Wi-Fi Alliance, served as the editor for the regional profiles standard in Digital living network alliance (DLNA) and as the industrial liaison officer for the CE-Linux Forum. He has chaired about 30 conferences. Test automation plays an important role in improving software quality while reducing the cost and effort required for testing.

In general, test automation is defined as converting manual test cases to automation scripts which can be executed repetitively.

However, test execution is one of the many activities in the test lifecycle and does not result in "continuous testing" if other activities are not automated.

In this discussion, we introduce the approach and framework to automate and integrate all the key activities in the software test lifecycle. By automating activities such as test design, test data generation, test environment validation, execution and reporting - we enable "continuous testing" which in turn drives the "continuous delivery" for agile teams.

Automated Regression Test suite is always a blessing to have for testers ( from a productivity perspective ) , developers ( from a quick retesting turnaround time perspective ) , business stakeholders ( from a Time to Market perspective ) and project sponsors ( from a less cost perspective ).

When it comes to discrete technologies like Apache Hadoop Framework, Market ETL tools like Informatica or Datastage and isolated traditional datamarts like Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase Etc., it is really a challenge to identify one tool which can automate transactions, End to End.

What if the above requirement is addressed technically and cost is also brought further down by eliminating costly market tools and interfaces to automate test cases across different technologies and at the same time, improve the efficiency by defragmenting the automation code to the lowest possible level?

Looks like a fairytale but can definitely be achieved by investing some time in understanding the technology backdrop of the project and by devising automation in bits and pieces, in their own backyard.

All the individual pieces can later be collated and triggered through a common driver script.

This paper will demonstrate one such framework for a typical DWT / BIG DATA Architecture.

When we need to automate testing in a legacy application, there are multiple factors to be considered to gain real benefits of automation. In addition, we come across many hurdles and need to deal with different challenges to implement test automation, especially while dealing with large number of teams working on the same legacy system.
In this talk, I would be sharing and discussing some of the strategies needed to implement Test Automation in legacy systems using a pragmatic approach.

Key aspects I would be addressing include:
Where do we start automating?
Which type of tests we need to automate and where?
How do we handle refactoring while writing automated Unit tests?
Is it worth automating all components and all integration scenarios?

One of the latest disruptor in the entire IT landscape is the "Digital Technology". Digital Transformation always aims at putting customer value and end user experience at the heart of the digital initiatives. This has resulted in customer transactions being multi-channel, multi-device and multi-platform driven.

According to a survey, 85% of customers switch between one or more channels or devices (such as web, smartphones, tablets etc) to complete a transaction. So when testing needs to be done for these multi channel requirements, the major challenge is with getting the right amount of test coverage and test automation in place. A truly successful automation strategy will involve using a combination of tools to validate the customer experience across all channels – including web, smartphones, tablets etc.

In this paper, I will present a novel method where seamless automation of testing across multiple channels is done. I will also demonstrate the execution of automated scripts across multiple devices.

The Proposed method of Automation is to use the log capture file generated by minicom/cutecom kind of utilities for embedded systems to find bugs/errors/failures while running the commanded instructions through serial terminal files.

The process works by sending test commands/sequences by writing to serial terminal device files like /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyUSB0, … While in parallel, analyzing the logs generated by the command execution on board using the capture files generated by minicom/cutecom kind of utilities.

Because of uniqueness in serial terminal device files and the logs captured by individual terminal specific minicom processes, multiple such target embedded devices can be controlled and automated through single host machine.

Benefit being and architecture independent, single host to control multiple targets with no extra load on target devices, giving ideal performance and low cost automation.

The product landscape is changing significantly. In line with the changes, the QA strategy and efforts have to change as well. Manual testing has to become a niche. Automation is the key in the coming years - what, when and how we automate are all very critical questions to consider. App testing has to become end-to-end rather than being a quick and dirty quality effort. New domain based workflows need to be embraced. DevOps needs to be acknowledged and quality has to be weaved into it. Non-functional testing including performance and usability should be part of every tester's scope of operations. Newer testing types and relevant metrics need to incorporated. Software tester roles will have to change. Amidst all of this, we the testing fraternity, should uphold the sanctity of independent testing. It is now the time to gear up and bring in the change, for what is in store for QA in the coming years, as the future is not very far away! IoT involves diverse types of devices communicate and instantaneously exchange exponential data over crazy interfaces and unreliable complex networks. It mainly relays on a strong analytics engine acting independent of human interference. Hence testing and certifying such a complex environment’s performance will be a huge challenge. It is critical to implement a fool-proof test strategy

Performance testing is no longer restricted to simple load generation for a small set of business scenarios; IoT takes performance testing to a different dimension. Testing of volumes of varying types of data, running business scenarios over different devices and complex networks, you will have to set monitors to not only measure response times between different layers in the network, but also to carefully watch system statistics of the devices including, power usage, changes in device temperatures, memory usage, disk space usage etc. Reliability testing, endurance testing, scalability testing, failover and disaster recovery testing are all essential.

Load testing is the process of putting demand on a system or device and measuring its response. Load testing is performed to determine a system's behavior under both normal and anticipated peak load conditions. It helps to identify the maximum operating capacity of an application as well as any bottlenecks and determine which element is causing degradation. When the load placed on the system is raised beyond normal usage patterns, in order to test the system's response at unusually high or peak loads, it is known as stress testing. The load is usually so great that error conditions are the expected result, although no clear boundary exists when an activity ceases to be a load test and becomes a stress test.

Most of the banks are still dependent on age old Mainframes infrastructure which is not able to cope up with the demand resulting in multiple severity 1 defects in production and most of them are performance related. This has resulted in many banks across the world investing in payments transformation programs to replace the aging architecture landscape to more robust heterogeneous midrange application stack with an objective to improve the end user experience, performance and reliability of new system. Given that performance was one of the key areas of interest it has become very important for the banks to do extensive performance testing and fix the issues before deploying the solution into production.

This paper also talks about how to create the performance test strategy for mass & direct debit/credit payment engines, the key aspects to be considered and the challenges while doing the performance testing of an payments engine with the help of a case study of performance testing payments transformation project for tier-1 bank.

The product landscape is changing significantly. In line with the changes, the QA strategy and efforts have to change as well. Manual testing has to become a niche. Automation is the key in the coming years - what, when and how we automate are all very critical questions to consider. App testing has to become end-to-end rather than being a quick and dirty quality effort. New domain based workflows need to be embraced. DevOps needs to be acknowledged and quality has to be weaved into it. Non-functional testing including performance and usability should be part of every tester's scope of operations. Newer testing types and relevant metrics need to incorporated. Software tester roles will have to change. Amidst all of this, we the testing fraternity, should uphold the sanctity of independent testing. It is now the time to gear up and bring in the change, for what is in store for QA in the coming years, as the future is not very far away! Achieving complete test coverage within the stringent testing schedule is a challenge for any test engineer. The high importance given for the customer delivery deadline often diminishes the magnitude of a complete testing cycle. The concept of early defect detection is diluted here which will further result in additional costs and schedule slippages. Early detection of defects makes a big impact on the project execution cost and schedule.

Continuous Integration is an appropriate method that can act as a first step towards ensuring early defect detection. In an agile way of project execution, it is highly recommended that continuous integration is rightly implemented to ensure the early defect detection. Apart from continuous integration, ensuring complete test coverage, both static and dynamic, is highly required for a product development. In an agile development methodology, there are changes to the code happening almost every day. In order to ensure that the code we add on each day is of good quality. There is a huge effort involved in ensuring the code quality manually. Ensuring the code quality manually in such a scenario often turns out to be an unachieved target. Continuous Integration technology is the apt choice in such circumstances.

Ensuring complete static and dynamic test coverage without losing the focus of non functional testing is the day's requirement. Customers now don’t focus on functionality implementation alone. Performance, security, usability etc are now seen with equal importance.

Not only that , in this competitive and demanding world all the customers expect optimal output with less budget, maximized quality and increased time to market. Hence to meet such expectations from the customer end with the changing requirements, some organizations tend to rush testing by performing inadequate testing which might hamper quality while increasing long-term support costs or over test which may delay software's delivery to the market thus incurring more cost. To balance all these we have to think big and be proactive and talk in these terms to the client.

Also we need to get the customer feedback in a continuous manner which is a critical success factor for today's changing needs of the client. To fulfil all these objectives we need to understand the customer business and their changing needs. So how are we going to do this? This is can be done following agile methodologies and processes. But again can we fully say that, following agile practice will solve all these issues? The basic philosophy that we would be following is " Before you write a code , think about what it will do"

Finally, continuous testing is beyond automation. A shift left approach, automation and sharing of practices and tools form a bulk of this practice.
