DevOps In Practice: Build A Software Assembly Line In a Day8th and 9th March 2018

The goal of this workshop is to actually roll up our sleeves and integrate a DevOps tool-chain rather than get bogged down with definitions. On the way we appreciate the overall architecture of a DevOps pipeline, the role played by each component, and the underlying software development processes.

Instruction Methodology

Each participant will be given a set of virtual machines with DevOps tools and a Java ecommerce application pre-installed. Each participant will have to copy and launch these virtual machines on their laptops. During the workshop, participants will integrate the tools using suitable administration and configuration interfaces. They will make several small enhancements to the application, create test-cases for these changes, and enable continuous integration and deployment for the changes to go live.

In this workshop we will use Jenkins as the core platform for Continuous Integration and plug in other tools like Git, Nexus, TestNG and Selenium into the pipeline. For Continuous Deployment, we will digress a bit from Jenkins and bring in a specialized tool called OctopusDeploy.

  • Pre-requisite: Each participant must bring a laptop with at least 8GB RAM, of which 6GB can be allocated to the virtual machines to be launched, and with at least 60GB free disk space.

Attendee Benefits

  • Gain hands-on experience in setting up a functionally complete DevOps toolchain
  • Understand the processes and best practices that constitute DevOps
  • Take home a Proof-of-Concept for a CI / CD pipeline that can be easily enhanced for your own organization, by following the guiding principles emphasized in this workshop.
