COURSE OBJECTIVE

This Course addresses certain core set of processes that make a test leader capable, soft as well as technical. Over and beyond these capabilities the test leader needs to be aware of his/her role and responsibilities and the key areas of expertise required in order to successfully play the role of a test leader.

The outline of the course takes into account these essential set of skills and competencies and practices built around the skills and capability improvement.

About

Test Process Management help you in understand the Roles and Responsibilities of a test lead:

1.Technical, managerial, soft skills

2.Project, people, and organization‐wide role

3.Key performance areas

Test Management Practices &  Project Management skills

Competency  in  project  management  skills  help  Test  Leads  come  up  with  optimal solutions, which are developed within certain cost constraints and time horizons, and which meet certain performance/quality expectations.

These skills also helps Test leaders clearly define problems/requirements, their scope, manage the design and planning of the solutions within the project constraints, and have  a  detailed  work  breakdown  schedules  to  make  sure  all  members  have clear guidance on what they are expected to do and under what assumptions/constraints.

The  Test  Leader  is  faced  with  constant  and  competing  forces  which  disturb  this balance  between  the  cost,  time,  and  quality;  a  good  leader  does  not  react,  but anticipates these trends and proactively takes steps to make necessary tradeoffs.

It is important to understand the context in which the work needs to be managed by the Test Leader and apply the core test project management skills within this context to get optimal results.

Test Resource and Team Management Skills

The Test Leader's job is to make sure this happens. He/she is expected to make sure that right set of resources are located, recruited, mentored, coached, managed, and as  necessary,  motivated  to  push  the  envelope  to  give  their  best  possible  for  their team.

Communication Skills

All the team members are expected to have excellent communication skills, ranging from  written  communication, verbal  communication,  communication  with  team members  and  communication  with  the  other  stake  holders they  are  expected  to work very closely.

Leader is expected to go beyond that, and  needs advanced level of communication skills to get best results. Leader needs to have excellent listening skills, negotiation skills,   consensus   building   skills,   moderating   skills   to   facilitate   productive brainstorming and strategy sessions.

Ability to develop creative solutions and lead in an environment full of ambiguities

If  there  are  no  problems  and  every  one  does  exact  what  is  expected  and expectations  do not  change,  then  there  is  no  need  for  a  leader.  But  in  real  world, problems  do  come  up, they  may  be  people,  technical,  political,  business  related  or something else.

Leader is expected to quickly grasp the situation, get necessary data related to that situation, analyze, come up with alternative solutions, its pros, cons, break down the solution into parts,  decide on the right one, put it all back together, synthesize, sell it to the stakeholders, and present it to the outside world.

It always makes sense to have all the right data before the leader selects a solution for  the  problem.  But  there  are  several  situations,  where  the  data  is  just  now available, or  is  too  time‐consuming  and  expensive  to  get,  making  it  impossible  or impractical. In such situations, leader is expected to act decisively even in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity.

Strategic, Big picture, Organization building skills

Leader is not only responsible for getting the current job, assignment or project done with high quality, but also think about the future. Leader is expected to understand the organization's vision, mission, and strategy. Leader is expected to anticipate the growth  of  the  projects,  growth  of  the  teams,  growth  of  the  organization  or  a company  and  clearly  define  his/her  contribution  and  his  /  her  team's  contribution towards this all rough growth.
