Evangelizing the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Mindset
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is an important approach for organizations looking to optimize the performance of their systems and applications to deliver reliable, scalable and secure solutions to the users. Moving towards an SRE model involves several critical stages and evaluations that could vary for each organization based on their distinctive landscape of needs, current systems, applications and processes. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. While organizations invest a significant amount of time to assess the current state of their systems, establish SRE goals and implement best practices, the most crucial component of the transformation journey is to rally the organization towards embracing the SRE mindset. This involves a fundamental shift in the perspective towards operations and infrastructure, by approaching them as software engineering challenges and dismantling organizational silos with a shared ownership model. A ‘Reliabilitymindset’ should bemodeled beyond SRE.
