X Topic Abstract

The crash of oil prices and slowdown of China’s economy have fetched headlines in media off late. The subject has encouraged me to understand economic reasons and relate the implications for Indian services industries. It would be good to preempt a discussion on the topic whether what could happen to Chinese manufacturing or to Middle-East Oil industry could repeat for Indian IT? If so, what should India do to prepare itself today to face this future?

(1) Understanding the Context - Robotics, Machine Learning, and IoT

You are in the final lap of your early morning dream and the alarm goes off at 6AM. Suddenly you remember that you forgot to buy milk yesterday and since you have an early morning meeting, it seems that you have to start your day without your cup of steaming coffee. Fortunately your Refrigerator has already ordered milk based on your regular consumption pattern and available inventory. Also, your alarm clock has already instructed your coffee maker to start brewing your coffee and based on your office timing/meeting schedule, your laptop has instructed your geyser to keep the water in the bathroom at your preferred temperature.

Does it sound like dream or science fiction? Not anymore. With the rapid development in the field of Robotics, Machine Learning and IoT, we have all the pieces of technology to make this happen and it’s just a matter of time when this technology pieces will be integrated to transform our way of living.

- Robotics deals with programmed machines designed to do labor intensive work. Machine Learning is the science of getting computers and machines to function without being programmed to do so. The combination of Robotics and Machine learning results in Robots with the capability to do the jobs on their own - e.g. Self-driving cars.

- Machine Learning tasks can start with supervised learning, then moving to a semi-supervised state and then unsupervised learning. It basically contains the essence of statistical pattern recognition, parametric/non-parametric algorithms, neural networks, recommender systems etc. Machine learning is an advanced state of intelligence - With Internet of Things (IOT), multiple robots can get interconnected.

- Internet of Things (IoT) offers an environment where objects or people have unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. As per Gartner, by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices. IoT can be applied to monitoring and capturing data from anything and everything connected to a network – e.g. Media, Environmental Monitoring, Infrastructure Management, Manufacturing, Energy Management, Medical & Healthcare Systems, Building & Home Automation or Transportation.

A 'thing', in the Internet of Things, can be anything that can be assigned an IP address and has ability to transfer data over a network – e.g. a patient with heart monitor implant, and other similar devices/objects. IPv6 has offered the capability of assigning unique IP address to every atom on the surface of the earth for many earths.

X Topic Abstract

The software world is rapidly changing with Advanced Analytics, IoT and Cloud applications that can be consumed over a gamut of smart devices and have a rapid release cycle. Software testing practices need to not only adapt to these changing needs but stay ahead. What this directly means is that software test automation no longer a luxury but a necessity. It is the rule not the exception. Despite this, it often happens that organizations are not able to derive the optimal benefit out of their automation investments, so much so that, the automation stack starts to assume the form of a "white elephant". Questions like when to start, how much automation is just right, which is the best tool, white box or black box automation, who should automate, how to determine the success of an automation project etc. continue to haunt automation project managers often.

In the last 10 years of my experiences with SAP, I have closely seen the applications, development methodologies and consequently test practices evolve. This session aims to provide the audience with an insight about the automated testing practices and experiences at SAP. Experiences that have throttled us forward and also the ones that have been eye-openers. In this session, we shall discuss the common aberrations that test organizations inadvertently do and ways to avoid them. We shall also delve deeper into practices that have proved most effective in the space of automated testing.

Digital technology is changing the world and also the face of the customer. It is not the demand of the product, services or the brand but the demand of the customer who is playing the crucial role in the digital world. Digital platform is transforming into story telling for the customers rather than giving product specifications, merits which is the old trend. Today’s customer wants anything, anywhere, anytime services with common experience, which his Omni-channel experience across different devices, platforms.

Customer coming to an Omni-channel world expects the same seamless experience on mobile, web, tablets and kiosks at the storefront. This makes testing a real challenge to cope up with multiple devices, platforms, cross browsers combinations keeping the speed to market in tact without any compromise on the quality. Traditional ways of testing even in Agile will make it difficult to take care of the Digital customer, as this requires unique thinking, paradigm shift in thought process in terms of testing for the Digital Space. Customer journey is an important theme which is enabling the digital world strategies to make it more meaningful to the digital transformation organisations. As part of this story telling became an important input for the focused customer centric approach.

In this Digital technology, I'm going to talk about how automation is impacting the testing world and How best we can take care of the releases and it's ways, strategy to cope up with the digital world with end to end test automation.

This is the story of a company that had 10s of customers and were facing severe scaling issues. They approached us. They had a good product predicting a few hundred customers within 6 months. VCs went to them. Infrastructure scaling was the only unknown; funding for software-defined data centers. We introduced Terraform for infrastructure creation, Chef for OS hardening, and then Packer for supporting AWS as well as VSphere. Then, after a few more weeks, when there was a need for faster response from the data center, we went into Serf to immediately trigger chef-clients and then to Consul for service monitoring
